One of a Kind
1936 Plymouth Kustom by Jerry Gennuso
Currently registered in the state of California as a 1936 Plymouth
Believe it or not this car might have been made into a BBQ!
That is, if Jerry and a friend hadn't rescued her from a junk yard in Bakersfield California.
It took Jerry a year and a half to build this Westergard inspired Kustom,
and when I say inspired, I mean inspired by some of the greats!
There has always been the question of who really started the post war kustom craze here in Southern California. A lot of folks will say the Barris Boys, but if you dig, you will find about a guy by the name of Harry Westergard and another gentleman that Harry worked for by the name of Dick Bertoluccie. These were the guys doing super radical designs in the mid 40's. |
A Radical
Kustom incorporates of the best components of two or three body styles with
intertwining ornamental bright work, so as to come up with something unique,
a one of a kind that the folks in
This car is a perfect example of how it is done.
|
Her Body is Verified and still uses the original VIN number.
Her Grill is that of a 1936 La Salle
Her Hood Ornament is that of a 1941 Cad
There is a good chance that you have seen this car,
she's been to car shows held in Paso, Santa Maria, Ventura and Las Vegas.
Her Front Fenders are from a 1940 International with the wheel openings from a 1953 Chevy
(bags down)
Her Rear Fenders are from a 1934 Hudson,
Rear Section and Rear Apron are made by hand out of steel!
Running Boards hand made with steel inner frame.
Her rear air (bag) suspension is that of a late model Lincoln using a Navigator pump system.
When slammed it gives the car a stance that it looks like it is coming out of the bowels of the earth.
Like in a Westergard you can see that this car has a radical chop, a completely redefine front
end and nose, with molded fenders, shaved trim, and some really kewl skirts to seal up the rear wheel wells.
(bags up)
Skirts are removable Fiberglas with steel inner frame reinforcement, Emblem 1941 Buick
Mustang II Front end
Hood and side panels hand fabricated of steel,
and backed with all steel reinforcement frame.
Under the hood you will find a freshened up 305 Chevy with approx. 4,000 miles
on new lifters, crank, cam, and bearings.
She gets approx 21 MPG with her 2 barrel carb on long hauls.
She's got a 700 R4 Automatic Transmission running a 10 bolt Chevy rear end.
The interior is very basic with late model tilt steering
hooked up to power rack and pinion for good handling.
AM FM / CD Player with 4 speakers
The seats are from a 1990 Escort, both seats recline,
the drivers seat is adjustable but not the passenger seat.
The top is permanent and has been hand fabricated in steel with steel frame reinforcement.
The working Dome light is from a 1950 Chevy Truck.
It was the intention to have the seats recovered because of all the welding spludge
that left it's mark on the drivers seat after welding the top!
The exterior of the top has been covered in a heavy padded vinyl
by Martin's upholstery out of Canoga Park.
Original heater box on the passenger side.
(not working at this time but can easily be refurbished)
The Dash and Cluster is stock, the Speedo is not hooked up, the Water temp and Oil pressure work!
Working Gas Gauge is after market!
Simple cluster under dash for Hood latch, switches for lights, air bags.
All lights work, Hi Low beams, and Turn Signals work.
Her Head Lights are from a 1940 Plymouth
Her Tail Lights from a 1950 Chevy
(bags way up for rear tire removal and tall speed bumps)
(No Rear or Side Glass)
She's a real good driver her 15 Gal Nova Gas Tank @ 21 MPG will get you out of town and then some!
Jerry's had a great time putting this car together and showing it the past few years,
but now it is time to go on to other projects and let someone else take over and either drive her as she is or
be inspired like Jerry and add their own twist..
Guaranteeing the new owner years of enjoyment.
