1958 GMC/ Cab Over Flat Bed
Heavy Duty Hauler/ by Robert Bent
Currently Registered in the State of California
When it wasn't being used by the farm the truck was stored in a barn.
As a result, the cab and frame do not show extensive signs of rust.
Max gross payload 22,000 lbs, and the max gross combination weight is 32,000 lbs.
The 8 x 12 flatbed was originally part of a
construction trailer that was heavily reinforced for hauling equipment.
Bent added additional reinforcement of two (2) 2 x 4 x 1/8 square steel
tube rails on the front of the frame to correspond with the GMC frame rails.
The back square steel tubes would serve the dual purpose of receiving a sliding car catcher in the back that would act as a support for a hinged 3 section Bent planned to add to the back end.
The purpose of this was so that it could have 2 positions, 1 flat, 1 angled downward, to allow easier loading of vehicle or equipment.
The hinge would also allow for the 3 section to be folded up on to the flatbed so that the overall length of the truck from front to back would be 20 for the typical size of a large swap meet space.
Prior to the installation of the flatbed, the vehicle weighed approximately 7,000 lbs.
And is Currently Registered with the State of California @ 7,000 lbs.
Estimate of the new flatbed weight is approx. 1,000 lbs.
The
current overall length of the vehicle for shipping purposes is 21 overall
height of the vehicle is 710 at the cab.
(it doesnt have power steering)
1958 GMC with factory
installed 338ci
3-speed Brownie (under drive direct drive over drive), and 2-speed Timkin electric shift rear end.

This truck was equipped with a radio and roof of cab mounted speaker.
Also, the truck has a
lighter socket (no lighter), dome light, drivers side armrest, and heater.
The gas gauge and oil pressure gauge are functional, but the speedometer and Sun tachometer do not function.
There is no turn signal
assembly on the steering column, and the lights save for one headlight, do not
work.
You have to pull up on the Driver Side Window when rolling it up.
Just needs a track adjustment.
The emergency brake is not functional as the drum that attaches to the output of the
transmission is gone and the brake band is broken.
There is some rust on the lower portion of the passenger side door,
but other than that the body
is very solid and rust free.
The overall width of the cab is 7 and the widest point on the truck is the flatbed portion at 8.
The vehicle was originally shipped on a 3-car angled car hauling trailer
from Oregon to California because of its size.
You need to know this if you are having it shipped,
the shipper must tell the driver or they will not be able to ship this vehicle.
