The other car is a belly tank that Julio has been puttin' together and he hopes to run it in 2003 but first lets get back to this here modified roadster. Like I was sayin' Julio and Brad has been workin' and runnin' this thing the whole season of 2002.  They are runnin' in a gas modified class.

Now here's the deal.  The engine is a Chevy 350 V8 but only runs on 4 cylinders. So ya ask "How's that done?"  Well it's like this. One side of the engine is dummied up. First ya gawt ta take out the pistons, rods and valves, from one side of the engine; then ya gotta counter weight the crank so's it don't go shimmin' its way off the chassis and messin' things up inside. They put this here flat head over the dummy side of the engine as to block off that side of the mill.

The engine was donated by the Russ Eyers of the San Diego Roadster Club. The engine has held 17 records in other vehicles startin' in the early 70's through 92. Most of which were  more standard looking roadsters with  shorter wheel base etc. One record held was sumpthin' like a 180mph.

The Plugs in the head are just there to plug the holes. The Plugs mounted below fire to air.

Obviously the carburetors on that side of the car aint werkin' either; but the distributor is,  so ya take the plugs and ya find yerself a nice place ta mount the things so they fire to air; this allows ya to use the ignition system with out having to modify  it and keeps everything in time so ya don't have ta change out the timing chain, fly wheel or  any of that stuff.

The gas tank is in the nose.  Gas is regulated by what is called a pill, (it's the thing that is zip tied to the frame in the left hand side of the engine pictured above.) this is a one way valve that restricts the gas at high rpm's as to not load up the carbs. You can change the pill to accommodate the engines natural running condition. This mill runs at about 6k.

The other thing that makes this a modified roadster is the chassis and body design.  You can see in the foto above that the chassis is much longer than a standard roadster and the body is obviously more streamlined. The water to cool the engine is kept in the right hand side of the body near the right rear tire. (like a passanger) There is no radiator just an electric water pump and a tank of water. The tank serves two functions (1) Cooling and (2) ballast to keep the rear end down. You can actually change the water level to accommodate the weight needed to counterbalance the weight of the driver, engine torque and track conditions. You can also change yer tire pressure for road conditions.

The Cockpit controls go sumpthin' like this. Water temp, tac. in the heads up position; to the right is the starter, battery switch and water pump, the thing between the drivers leg is the brake, there is 2 shifter levers to the right, parachuted release is on the left and the extinguisher control is somewhere in there too.  The Gas pedal and clutch make it goooooooooo !!!!!! The Gas mix is approx. 50% 110 oct. 50% 97 oct. you can change yer mixture but its is not kosher to use additives.
